Event for expectant mothers in Torrington, Winsted to be held Feb. 28

TORRINGTON - The Parents as Teachers program of Education Connection is sponsoring a pampering day for expectant mothers in the Torrington and Winchester areas Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Torrington Area Health District, located at 350 Main St.
The free event “Love Yourself, Love your Baby” will feature mini-massages, hair-stylings and updos by Marinello’s School of Beauty, health education, family fun activities to take home, mini-manicures by Marinello’s and information on local resources available to families. The mini-massages will be provided by Patricia Shelesky with A New Day in Winsted. The event will have a raffle and door prizes.
Raffle prizes include baby clothes, diapers, bellybands, a front baby carrier, diaper bags stocked with essentials, a 10-pack of passes to the KidsPlay Children’s Museum, and an infant massage course for up to five women that will be taught by Lisa Burton from the Onejoy Center for Wellness of Hamden.
Other events happening during the event are a mini-childbirth class taught by Laura Dubriel from Family Strides. Judith Hogan, a registered nurse will be there to answer any general health questions guests may have. There will also be a booth for family fun activities with take-home packets for the expectant mothers who already have kids.
“There will be child-care provided so the moms who have kids can enjoy themselves,” said Tara Doherty, Home Visitor and Parent Educator for the program.
Parents as Teachers is an evidence-based national program model designed to ensure that young children are healthy, safe and ready to learn, said Doherty. The Parents as Teachers program is open to any pregnant women regardless of income in Torrington and Winsted. Doherty said the Parents as Teachers just launched in May of 2013, with 22 pregnant women currently enrolled.
