Moving Forward for Aug. 17

Residents and contractors are reminded by Pacific Gas and Electric Co. to call 8-1-1 before digging underground.

An underground utility line is damaged during a digging project every three minutes in the U.S, PG&E says, on projects from small ones like installing a mailbox, planting a tree or laying a patio.

Striking a utility line can lead to injury, repair costs, fines and inconvenient service outages.

A call to 8-1-1 connects homeowners and excavating contractors to Underground Service Alert (USA). The free service notifies utility companies about any excavation project. Utilities then dispatch professional locators to the digging site to mark location of underground lines with flags, chalk-based spray paint or both.
